Family Constellations

Seeing Connections, Restoring Flow

Family Constellations is a therapeutic method developed in the 1980s by German psychoanalyst Bert Hellinger. It reveals hidden dynamics, loyalties, and unresolved traumas within a family system using a unique group-based approach.

The Core Idea

Families share a collective soul or system. If a past family member suffered severe trauma, was excluded, or died tragically, that unresolved energy can create systemic entanglements affecting later generations.

How It Works

1

The Presentation

A client presents an issue they are struggling with — depression, relationship problems, or recurring family conflicts.

2

Choosing Representatives

The client chooses strangers from the group to represent members of their family — parents, grandparents, siblings, and themselves.

3

The Constellation

The client physically places these representatives in the room, positioning them according to how they intuitively feel they relate to one another.

4

The Field

Once placed, the representatives stand silently. Remarkably, they often begin to report feeling physical sensations and emotions that mirror the actual family members they represent.

5

Resolution

The facilitator gently moves the representatives or has them speak specific healing phrases to restore order and balance to the family system.

Core Principles

Belonging

Every person has a place in the family system.

Order

There is a natural order in families — parents before children, first spouse before second.

Balance

Giving and taking must be balanced for harmony.

Love & Loyalty

Invisible bonds of love and loyalty connect family members across generations.

Awareness

Seeing and acknowledging what is hidden brings healing.

Systemic Entanglements

When the flow of love between generations is blocked — whether through trauma, exclusion, or unacknowledged death — later family members may unconsciously repeat the same patterns of suffering in an attempt to restore order and love to the system.
